His real name was Samuel Bates. He was born and raised in Boston, the son of a wealthy ship merchant.
Though Samuel believed strongly in American independence a lame leg from a childhood injury left him unable to join the fighting.
Just prior to the Battle of Lexington Samuel gave shelter to an old woman accused of witchcraft. In return for his kindness, the old woman asked Samuel what he wanted most in the world. Samuel said he wanted nothing more than to help America achieve independence.
His answer pleased the old woman. She cast a spell that cured Samuel's crippled leg and turned him into the greatest soldier alive, making him faster and stronger than any man on Earth.
Samuel knew he could not fight openly or his father's shipping company would suffer reprisals from the British government. To conceal his identity he donned a mask and became the Minute Man.
